Dr. Martens Icons: 1460 vs 1461 vs 2976 Chelsea

You’ve met the talent, but now it’s time to meet the stars of the show. Dr. Martens’ icons aren’t to be messed with - after all, they secured icon-status for a reason!

These boots are more than footwear — they're a statement in craftsmanship, youth culture and enduring design that continues to shape wardrobes across generations.

Meet the icons

Dr. Martens 1461

Now available in leather and vegan non-leather options, the 1461 is a low-cut, hard-wearing shoe introduced exactly one year after the 1460. It uses the same Airwair technology that helped set Dr. Martens ahead of its competitors. These require significantly less stitching than their older brother, notably across the sharp vamp with a distinct taper towards the heel.

Typically, the 1461 offers a touch less support than its former sibling, making it well suited to everyday wear without sacrificing any of Dr. Martens’ distinctive design details.

Dr. Martens 2976 Chelsea

Taking to production lines in the early ’70s, Dr. Martens’ 2976 Chelsea boot carries easy-wear Victorian farming DNA at its heart. Comfort comes from elasticated ankle gussets and the signature ‘With Bouncing Soles’ embroidered on two pull-tabs, the lettering based on Bill Griggs’ own handwriting.

Although the Chelsea boot’s profile dates back to 1851, TOWER stocks an array of modern options — from padded fur linings and patent leather to thicker soles and multiple colourways.

Dr. Martens 1460

It all started on 1 April 1960. Dr. Martens’ first eight-holed boot was handmade in Wollaston, introducing ‘Airwair’ and yellow welt stitching to the retail world. Production combined Northamptonshire leather with patented German soles. (Fancy the full story? Read the history of Dr. Martens.)

Today the 1460 remains a cornerstone of the Dr. Martens line — as relevant on the high street as it was on the factory floor. Whether you favour a pared-back 1461, a sleek 2976 Chelsea or the original 1460, each pair carries its own story and durability that rewards wear.
