The Vans Sk8-Hi

THE SK8-HI

You’d be pretty hard-pressed to find a Vans silhouette that hasn’t become an icon, but the Sk8-Hi perhaps ranks above the rest. Seriously, who hasn’t copped a pair of Sk8-Hi?

Vans collection

This high-top silhouette was first released in 1978, originally under the unassuming name “Style 38” (renamed in ’95). It became the second style to bear the brand's signature side-stripe—after the other icon, the Old Skool.

A Cultural Icon

The Sk8-Hi’s rise was immediate within skate culture, but its reach soon extended far beyond the ramps. From punk and skate scenes to high-fashion runways, the Sk8-Hi crossed subcultural boundaries and became a perennial favourite for creatives, musicians and fashion insiders alike. Its recognisable silhouette communicates authenticity while still allowing for individual expression — which is why it remains a wardrobe staple decades on.

Design & Evolution

Built for function yet endlessly adaptable, the Sk8-Hi combines ankle support, reinforced toe caps and Vans’ grippy waffle sole. Over the years the sneaker has been reimagined in suede, canvas, leather and premium collaborations, proving the design’s versatility. Whether pared back in monochrome or upgraded with luxury materials and bold graphics, the Sk8-Hi keeps its DNA intact while offering something for every aesthetic.

Styling the Sk8-Hi is equally effortless. Tuck them under tailored trousers for a contemporary edge, roll up denim for a classic skate-inspired look, or contrast them with softer, more tailored pieces to let the silhouette do the talking. It’s this sartorial flexibility — as much as its technical heritage — that secures the Sk8-Hi’s place in modern wardrobes.

Since the ’70s the Sk8-Hi has been revamped and reissued many times over. No colourway or material has been off-limits, truly demonstrating the versatility of this much-loved sneaker. From suede and canvas to bold collaborations and seasonal drops, the Sk8-Hi continues to evolve while remaining unmistakably Vans.
