DNA DEEP-DIVE: THE DR. MARTENS 1460

Dr. Martens 1460 boots

All you need to know, and possibly more, about the Dr. Martens 1460 boot.

History

The story begins in 1901 with the Griggs family in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, where the family name was already associated with sturdy, reliable workwear boots.

Fast-forward to 1945, when a young army doctor, Klaus Maertens, injured his foot and started experimenting with a bouncy, air-cushioned sole made from salvaged rubber rather than hard leather. While on leave, he improved the idea using a cobbler's last and needle to create early prototypes.

Sales were slow at first, until Maertens showed the boots to his old university friend, Dr. Herbert Funck. Together they went into business, producing shoes from discarded rubber found at Luftwaffe airfields. By 1959, sales had grown enough for the pair to look at international markets.

That is where the story returns to the Griggs family. The Griggs Group Ltd. quickly acquired the patent rights to manufacture the shoes in the UK and anglicised the name from Maertens to Martens.

The first pair of Dr. Martens boots came out on 1 April 1960: the 1460 boot we still know today. The original Wollaston factory remains an important part of the brand's history.

By the late 1960s and early 1970s, the boots had become popular across youth subcultures, from skinheads and punks to bikers and new wave.

The boot

The silhouette of the classic 1460 boot remains close to Klaus Maertens' original idea. Later refinements included a reshaped heel for a better fit, the yellow welt stitching that became a Dr. Martens signature, and the AirWair heel loop with the famous “with bouncing soles” wording based on Bill Griggs' handwriting.

Other details include an eight-eyelet lace-up, a chunky Goodyear-welted sole and the distinctive tread pattern that helps make the 1460 instantly recognisable.

A testament to the boot's popularity, the Dr. Martens 1460 AirWair boot was added to the list of British Design Icons in 2006, alongside designs such as Concorde, the Jaguar E-Type and the World Wide Web.

Over the years, the 1460 has been updated in multiple colourways, materials and collaborations, while also inspiring closely related styles such as the Pascal boot.

In an age of sneakers and athleisure, the continued popularity of the 1460 shows that sometimes you cannot beat a classic, even if you have to break it in first.

Why the 1460 still works

The reason the Dr. Martens 1460 has lasted is simple: it is distinctive without being difficult to wear. The eight-eye shape, yellow stitching, grooved sole and heel loop make it instantly recognisable, but the boot still works with everyday wardrobes.

Black Smooth leather is the classic choice if you want something versatile. Cherry red brings more character while still feeling timeless. Softer leather versions, such as Pascal styles, can be a good option if you want the 1460 shape with a slightly easier feel from the start.

However you wear them, the 1460 is one of those rare boots that feels just as relevant with jeans, dresses, tailoring, workwear or layered winter outfits. It has history behind it, but it does not feel stuck in the past.
