DNA Deep-dive: Waffling, the story of VANS' Waffle sole

Origins

Let's get something straight — it takes a lot, and we mean a lot, to become a totem in the footwear world. But a small crew in Southern California did exactly that: they broke the mould and set a new precedent with a shoe that did just about everything. In 1966 Paul Van Doren opened the doors to the Van Doren Rubber Company — a day that would go down in footwear history.

From Canvas to Counterculture

However, before the globally recognised Waffle sole and a spot atop skateboarding royalty's throne were achieved, Paul had a number of boxes to tick — the most important being the creation of a silhouette that couldn't be forgotten. He believed that to succeed one must either "love it or leave it" — and that's how he ended up conquering casual footwear. That uncompromising approach helped forge a clean, recognisable aesthetic that stood out in a crowded market and made Vans instantly appealing to a new generation.

The Waffle Revolution

It all started in the early '60s, when Paul gathered the essentials, his family and quite possibly the kitchen sink before moving to Anaheim, deciding California would be the best birthplace for an affordable brand built to last. He didn't set out to make a skate shoe specifically — rather, a canvas shoe for anyone and everyone. But if success was destined, does the origin really matter? In creating something affordable and durable, the competitive Zephyr Boys adopted Paul's silhouette — Allen Sarlo, Jay Adams, Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta all rocked VANS until the soles fell off, and they became a development group for perfecting the waffle sole and improving traction. It was also this team who first used the phrase "Off the Wall" — a slogan later adopted by VANS to identify skate-specific models. Their hands-on feedback and relentless testing directly informed the Waffle sole's distinctive pattern, prioritising grip and resilience in real-world skating conditions.

Design for Riders

Once convinced skating represented a viable market for canvas footwear, the cogs started turning. VANS began designing shoes with riders in mind: more ankle cushioning, grippier tread and bolder detailing. Smart moves — almost as clever as being the first manufacturer to offer custom colourways on request, or introducing the 'Jazz Stripe' on the sidewall in 1977. These incremental innovations signalled Vans' evolution from a practical canvas shoe maker into a performance-driven, style-defining brand.

Legacy and Today

Fast-forward to today, VANS has a film feature, numerous music-related accolades and the footwear market in a headlock — expanding into wakeboarding, motorsports, snowboarding and even BMX competitions. If it can be considered ever-so-slightly dangerous, VANS is all over it. The Waffle sole remains the brand's signature: a simple, functional icon that has transcended sport to become a cultural touchstone.
