DNA Deep-dive: Vans x Van Gogh

The Vans x Van Gogh collection

Vans partners with the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam for another hotly anticipated Vans collaboration.

Iconic Vans silhouettes are adorned with equally iconic Van Gogh paintings. Alongside a tidy collection of revamped footwear, the range also sees apparel & accessories reworked with signature Van Gogh pieces.

With over 2,000 pieces of artwork produced from his decade long career, Vans had more than enough Van Gogh material to pull from. Four main works take centre stage, each perfectly embodying the signature style the painter is known for.

Skull, Almond Blossom, Sunflowers and Van Gogh’s self-portrait proudly emblazon the Sk8-Hi, Slip-On & Authentic. Long & short sleeve tees still carry a lot of classic Vans DNA, with checkerboard sleeves, embroidered detailing and signature branding, all nicely blended with elements of the paintings.

Sure to be a winner, the Vans Authentic updated with the print from Sunflowers is subtle, summery, and will easily make you question why you’ve never worn a pair of yellow shoes before.

Again, as seen with the apparel, all footwear silhouettes retain Vans’ core identity. The shapes remain very much the same. Great accents can be seen in the collab branding featured on the insoles, alongside the updated inner lining revamped in contrasting orange.

The canvas texture of the footwear lends itself greatly to Van Gogh’s painterly style, almost looking like the prints have been painted on directly by the man himself.

The collection strikes a powerful juxtaposition between Vans’ usual target market and the audience you may generally associate with classical Fine Art. The collection does well in bringing two different worlds together, both masters at their own craft.

They’re classics updated with…classics

“We are delighted with the Vans x Van Gogh Museum collection, as it ties in with our mission to make the life and work of Vincent van Gogh accessible to as many people as possible in order to enrich and inspire them”, said Adriaan Dönszelmann, Managing Director of the Van Gogh Museum. “By uniting Van Gogh’s iconic artworks with iconic Vans styles, our partnership brings Vincent’s art “Off The Wall” and into the world to a new audience outside the museum.”
