It’s probably one of the most mimicked British accents (Danny Dyer, we’re looking at you), but simply saying you’re from east London isn’t enough to claim you’re a true cockney. Oh no. According to tradition, a true cockney must be born within earshot of the sound of Bow Bells from the historic Cheapside church St Mary-le-Bow, which unfortunately rules out Canning Town-born Mr Dyer.

Tell me something else…
The sound of Bow Bells are even credited with having persuaded Richard (Dick) Whittington to do an about turn from then village Highgate in the 14th century to remain in London to became Lord Mayor.
