What Does It Take To Be A Footwear Buyer?

We speak to TOWER London’s resident shoe expert, buyer Sophie Bacon to find out what she loves about her job, how she got into the industry and her style tips for SS14.

“I’ve had a lifelong obsession with fashion since I started playing dress-up in my mum’s wardrobe when I was younger so working as a buyer is the perfect role for me, even though I studied English literature at university. Since graduating, I’ve done a couple different bits and pieces in various industries including social media, digital marketing and e-commerce but I have always been in fashion.

I’ve been at TOWER London since last July. Buying was always something I knew I would love to do, but I wasn’t sure how to get into it. I was just very lucky I was able to prove I was capable of the role at TOWER London. One thing I really love about the job is getting the chance to see next season’s styles before anyone else – that’s definitely a perk!

There’s no such thing as a standard day here. I can be doing anything from entering purchase orders and making reports of sales to meeting brands and working closely with our three stores to see how they are doing. I like the variety though and it helps that I love the brands we stock. Shellys London is a current fave, I’m definitely after a pair of sandals for my holidays. As well as sandals, I love the pool slider and jelly shoe trends for SS14. They’re both so easy to sport and I love the 90s feel styles have.

I finish work any time between 6pm and 9pm, depending how busy we are. Buying season is especially manic and often requires a few late finishes. After work I either spend the evening watching Game of Thrones with my flatmates or meeting friends for drinks and dinner.”
