Skechers x One Piece

Skechers have teamed up with Japanese Manga cartoon, One Piece, for a limited edition collection just for women.

Some background.

One Piece is a bit of a juggernaut on the Anime scene, starting as a Manga comic in 1997.

Manga = magazine/ book

Anime = TV/ film series

One Piece is now the world’s best-selling Manga cartoon and with 831 episodes aired (as of April 2018), it’s also the longest running Anime series. For context, One Piece trumps The Simpsons’ 644 episodes.

Originally only supposed to run for 5 years, the series just kept on going, eventually breaking into cult-classic territory.

So, why a Skechers’ collaboration?

Why the funk not. Well, One Piece isn’t new to branching out. Video games, films, theme parks, a live-action series and many more projects built around the One Piece story have all been created thus far. So a footwear collab isn’t too untoward and feels pretty timely due to the rise of street-wear, and happily coincides with sketchers’ re-found popularity.

First dropping in Asia, to huge success, the collection launched in Europe with a party co-hosted by Highsnobiety in London.

An update on Skechers’ classic D’Lites 2.0 silhouette, three colourways take inspiration from the cartoons three main characters. Although all three pairs feature panels of bright, clashing colours, they’re neatened up and tied together by a predominantly white upper, white laces and a black outsole. The trainers never feel over-the-top.

As with a lot of collab pairs, the details are often where the highlights are at. Collab branding featuring the One Piece skull-and-cross-bones adorn the tongue and insole. One Piece branded taping stretches down under the laces and appears on a pull tab at the back of the heel. The shoebox is also pretty awesome.

A surprisingly hard decision to make, but top pair might have to be the red, blue and brown colourway. Just works so nicely, the colour pairing feels different and looks suitably bold on-the-foot.
