How Did Knightsbridge Get its Name?


It may currently be home to Harrods and Harvey Nicks but there was a point hundreds of years ago when Knightsbridge really did live up to its name. Back in the Middle Ages, so legend goes, two medieval knights fought a duel on a bridge over the now covered River Westbourne which flowed from the area to the Thames via the Serpentine in Hyde Park.

Next time you’re on the Tube at Sloane Square look out for a green conduit above the platform – that’s what holds the River Westbourne.
