Your Guide to Glasgow

Heading to Glasgow for the 20th Commonwealth Games? Then chances are you’re going to have some spare time in between the main events. To make the most of your time in this exciting city we’ve done the hard work for you and rounded up the best of what’s going on.

The Opening Ceremony
Celebrate the start of the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday 23rd July in the picturesque Kelvingrove Park. A lush green space, the venue will be playing host to Belle and Sebastian. Alternatively, why not visit the alternate Opening Ceremony at Glasgow Green? Like Kelvingrove, it will give everyone to chance welcome in the games while listening to the likes of Lulu, Eddi Reader, and James Grant. For every ticket that is bought for Glasgow Green, £1 will be donated to UNICEF.

The Festival
Tying in with the Commonwealth Games, the annual Merchant City Festival will be getting Glasgow up on its feet from Wednesday 23rd July to Sunday 3rd August. A cultural extravaganza, the specially extended programme promises to be a heady mix of theatre, fashion, workshops and wine tastings.

The Screening
Ideal for both families and friends, BBC at the Quay will be screening the best sporting action from the Games as well as featuring stage shows of BBC and CBBC favourites including a Question of Sport and Mastermind. Music will be provided by Texas, Simple Minds and Paloma Faith while Olympic champion Chris Hoy will be on hand to really up the ante.

The Bar
Located near the Kelvingrove Gallery, craft beer bar BrewDog is the perfect place to quench your thirst after an evening of singing and dancing at the Opening Ceremony. Flying the flag for expertly crafted beer, this independent chain of bars will be serving both tourists and regulars their delicious beers including Dead Pony Club, 5am Saint and Hardcore IPA.

The Pit Stop
Worked up an appetite watching some of the world’s best athletes perform? Then make your way to one of Cafe Gandolfi’s three restaurants: Cafe Gandolfi, Gandolfi Fish and Bar Gandolfi. From Scottish favourites at Cafe Gandolfi to pizzas and delicious drinks at Bar Gandolfi and you guessed it, fish at Gandolfi Fish, there really is something for everyone at these three Glasgow institutions. There’s even a takeaway section at Gandolfi Fish for those in a rush.
