Celebrate the Start of the World Cup with Cocobananas

Get into the spirit of the World Cup by taking a trip to new bar du jour, Cocobananas.

The bar: Cocobananas

Location: 101 Howie Street, London, SW11 3BA

First impressions: Tucked away above the raucous Bunga Bunga, Cocobananas (owned by the same people) instantly transports you from Battersea Bridge to Ipanema – minus the jetlag. Designed to look like a Brazilian beach shack, it’s a colourful mix of surfboards, bikini bunting and yup, you guessed it, beach balls.

What we drank: We sipped on Cachaça-infused cocktails which were sweet, delicious and potent. Served in tiny beach buckets, they instantly got us in the spirit of summer. Bottled Brahma beer was also on hand for those who liked their tipples more traditional.

What we danced to: Featuring an array of current hits, the music was carefully chosen to ensure you’re up on your feet at all times.

The damage: Cocktails start at £10 and sharing cocktails range from £30 for two people to £220 for eight.

Verdict: Fun and friendly, Cocobananas is a cool but unpretentious bar-cum-club that perfectly balances its Brazilian theme with plenty of substance. We’ll definitely be back.

Need to know: Cocobananas will be showing all Brazilian World Cup games (apart from those that are on Friday or Saturday evenings) during the tournament. Guests will be charged £5 entry and an additional £20 if they wish to enjoy a full Brazilian street food buffet and frozen cocktails before kick-off. There will also be special offers on other Brazilian drinks and a DJ will be on hand to keep the party going.

What to wear: If you want to follow the example of the scantily clad waiters and waitresses we’d say not much. If however you want to maintain the British Stiff Upper Lip, we’d recommend something cool but comfortable that you can have a good boogie in. Think loose dresses for her and short-sleeve shirts for him.
